1. About Me
David White
Owner & Director, Mister Shepherd Media LLC
My name is David White. I’m an experienced data manager with expertise in organizing data, analyzing data, visualizing data, communicating insights and building systems to support data-driven decision making. I’m committed to using data to solve real-world problems and to serving progressive, mission-driven organizations.
I’ve worked in the field of data for more than ten years and I also have a background in music and jazz composition. That combination has given me a unique perspective into the work that I do and has informed my practice in both fields. I’ve found that music and data both require analytical thinking, creativity, communication skills and empathy. There’s a quote from Steve Jobs on this topic that I find inspirational and informative:
We generally use the word artist to mean a visual artist of some sort but I believe there’s very little distinction between an artist of that type and a scientist or engineer of the highest caliber.
They’re people who pursue different paths but are [both] headed to the same goal—which is to express something of what they perceive to be the truth around them so that others can see it and benefit by it.I think the artistry is in having an insight into what one sees around them and putting things together in ways no one else has and finding a way to express that to others, who don't have the same insight, so that they can get some of the advantage of that insight which allows them to feel a certain way or do a certain thing.
With that in mind, my goals as a data professional have been to:
Illuminate data by placing it into context and revealing hidden connections
Humanize data by incorporating empathy and thoughtfulness into the design of data systems and data reports
Democratize data by giving all stakeholders access to actionable information in an easy-to-understand and easy-to-use format
If these three goals are met, I believe the result will be a community that is inspired and empowered to execute on whatever work they feel called to do. I believe that my role as a data professional should be to use my skills and my insight to elevate and support others in the important work that they are doing.
Here’s a brief summary what I’ve learned, where I’ve served and what contributions I’ve made so far:
